Online Learning Glossary

schedule

As businesses look for options to replace in-person learning events, training employees online has skyrocketed. Use this online learning glossary to keep track of industry lingo.

  1. Assessment: Assessments are a way to determine if a trainee has understood the learning objectives covered in the online learning course. It’s critical that training managers follow up personally with trainees who do not pass assessments in order to give them the necessary coaching they need to perform better on their next attempt.
  2. Asynchronous learning: Asynchronous learning means trainees learn individually at their own pace and at different times. This approach to training employees online is most effective for businesses, especially in the service industries, when shift work makes it challenging to train everyone at the same time.
  3. Blended learning: Blended learning combines more than one method of training into an overall learning management strategy. For example, you may use an online course, then follow that up with on-the-job coaching or mentoring.
  4. BYOC: This acronym stands for Bring Your Own Content. When training employees online, many businesses use a combination of their own courses and courses developed by other training experts. BYOC functionality allows you to import training into your learning management system. (See SCORM below.)
  5. Certification: A training certificate verifies that a trainee has successfully completed a course. Certification may be applied to any course, but is most critical for human resources and compliance
  6. LMS: LMS stands for Learning Management System, an online tool that allows you to implement, assign, and track online training courses for all employees regardless of their location.
  7. Objectives: Training objectives define what the trainees will understand or be able to do when they complete the training. Training employees online requires learning objectives that are specific to the employee’s job role and skill level.
  8. Onboarding: Onboarding, also known as employee orientation, is the process of getting new employees ready to work independently. Training employees online is known to speed up the onboarding process.
  9. Resource library: A resource library is a repository of reusable content, like videos, documents, policies, and learning aids that trainees can access to supplement their online training.
  10. SCORM: This acronym stands for Shareable Content Object Reference Model and refers to the technical standards for all computer-based learning, including online training. SCORM is often required for BYOC functionality to work (see BYOC above) to work.
